Skin cancer services at our Kenwick clinic
Full body skin checks
A head to toe examination of your skin, including areas that are hard to see yourself. Your doctor uses a dermatoscope, a handheld skin microscope, to look closely at moles and spots.
Mole and spot checks
A focused check of a new, changing or worrying mole or spot. If you are not sure which check you need, book a skin check and your doctor will advise.
Skin biopsy
A small sample of skin is taken under local anaesthetic and sent to a pathology laboratory to confirm a diagnosis.
Skin cancer excision and repair
Removal of skin cancers under local anaesthetic, including ellipse excisions and, where needed, skin flap or skin graft repair. Surgery is booked as a separate appointment after your initial consultation.
Cryotherapy
Freezing treatment for sunspots (solar keratoses) and some superficial skin lesions.
Cyst removal
Removal of simple skin cysts under local anaesthetic.

What happens at a skin check?
- Your doctor asks about your skin history, any previous skin cancers, your family history and any spots that concern you.
- You undress to your underwear in a private room so your doctor can check all areas of skin. Let your doctor know if there are areas you would prefer not to have examined.
- Your doctor examines your skin from scalp to feet, using a dermatoscope to look closely at moles and spots.
- If a spot needs further testing or treatment, your doctor explains the options, the risks and any out-of-pocket cost before anything goes ahead.
- Your doctor recommends when your next check is due, and the clinic can send you a reminder.
Who should have a skin check?
Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. At least two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer before the age of 70 (Cancer Council WA, published on Healthy WA).
You may benefit from regular skin checks if you have:
- fair skin that burns easily
- a personal or family history of skin cancer
- a large number of freckles or moles
- a history of sunburn, or have spent a lot of time working or relaxing in the sun
See a doctor promptly if you notice a new spot, a spot that changes in size, shape or colour, or a sore that does not heal.
Fees and bulk billing
Skin check consultations are bulk billed for patients with a valid Medicare card. Procedures such as biopsies, excisions and cryotherapy are privately billed, and your doctor will explain the cost before any procedure goes ahead. Full details are in our Practice Policy.
